Fall Semester, 2025
Installations and Expanded Media
Welcome to Ruben CS STA 351, which showcases the different installations made for the course over the semester
Installation #1 - Site-Related
For the first installation of the semester, we were instructed to have our artwork be site-related. My piece, which is titled Natural Fashion, was located in the Kresge art center stair way. I decided to put it in this area for the soul purpose of the natural lighting that comes through the windows and shines into the building. My concept for this project was originally inspired by the microbiological world of science that is used in the fashion industry. After several conversations and helpful critiques with others, I developed a different concept that still involved fashion and biology. Rather than just displaying microscopic biological organisms, I decided to use naturally derived dyes to color the muslin fabric that I used for the project. I used muslin because it is 100% natural cotton, and a sustainable fabric. I decided to also paint the shapes of leaves onto the fabric to add an additional natural contrast.
Review
Overall, this was the most fun installation to put together. Despite how labor intensive it was with the natural dying, painting, and sewing, I still enjoyed the outcome. The research for the project was just as entertaining as was the actual hands-on parts. There was lots to learn when it came to the chemical components of the dyes and fixatives of the muslin fabric.
Dimensions of installation:
-22 yard length
-14.5 inch width
Installation #2 - Time-Based
The second installation project, Constellations in Our Heritage, was based on the concept of time. I decided that I wanted to incorporate my heritage with astronomy. With that in mind, I based my installation off of the constellations that the ancient Mayans used to tell time for agricultural routines and daily life. Why did I decide to go back to the time and place of the Mayans? Because of my heritage that leads back to them. I felt a great connection to this project. The concept is whether it be the stars, constellations, planets, or galaxies that we see in the night sky, humans have become dependent on them to function in society. In my Mayan heritage, astronomy was mainly used for agricultural planning and timekeeping. The message that I wanted to share through this installation was how important it is that we remember our heritage that revolves around astronomy. Everybody comes from a culture, and every culture has used astronomy to survive and live their everyday lives in some way or another.
Review
I had a fun time with the concept of this project but a very difficult time with the construction of it. The materials of corn, glow-in-the-dark paint, glow yarn, and 19 gauge wire proved to be challenging to work with. In the end,

Installation #3 - Community-Based
My final project of the semester was titled Perception. The goal of this installation was to be interactive with the community in some way or another. Since the beginning of the course, I had been wanting to do a large scaled yet simplistic installation. I thought that this community-based one would be the perfect one to do that since I could used the observance and perspectives of the audience as the interactive aspect. The concept of Perception was for people to be able to peer through the different colored panels to the environment around them in order to see it in a different way. The message is that changing the lenses we see things through determines how we perceive the world around us.
Review: I had a very difficult time with the idea stages of this project and with trying to plan what I was going to do and the steps that I would take in order to complete it. Once I decided how to structure it and what materials I wanted to use, it was pretty fast to put together. I was happy with how it turned out in regards to simplicity and structure.
